Did you know...

I came across a mole one day (when a cat shall I say ‘invited’ one in) and I was so surprised by how small it was this one was – 10cm! It was very keen to get away and was using it’s large front paws to burrow into the sofa where the cat happily dropped it off. We of course made sure it got safely out and burrowed back into the soil outside.

Let’s hear more about these fascinating creatures!

  • Mole appears in the tale of ‘Noisy Nora’ and is a real problem for the gardener for chewing the roots of his plants. If you look at the pictures of Mole’s underground chambers you will see one filled with a collection of grubs for eating. Mole’s also LOVE earthworms! It is said that moles can eat their own body weight in worms in 1 day! Could you imagine if you ate your own weight in your favourite food? I think I’d get quite ill!

  • Moles aren’t completely blind as many stories would have us believe, but they are colourblind and can only see light and movement. They use special little sensors on the tip of their nose to find prey and other moles.
  • There are many types of mole but one of the most interesting to me is the star-nosed mole who uses its strange-looking snout to “feel” around for food.
